Thermoformers & Packaging Machines

Packaging machines seal food in a closed pack that protects it and extends its shelf life. A thermoformer, also called a form-fill-seal machine, heats a roll of bottom film and forms it into pockets in a die. The pockets are filled on the machine, a top film is sealed on under vacuum or a modified atmosphere, and the packs are cut apart. In skin packaging the top film is drawn down tightly over the product so it holds it in place.

Overview

About thermoformers & packaging

Tray sealers close pre-made trays with a lidding film and suit products sold in rigid trays; semi-automatic models handle smaller runs and inline machines keep up with continuous production. Vacuum chamber and belt machines evacuate and seal bags. A vacuum-packed shrink bag can then pass through a shrink tank, where hot water shrinks the film tight against the product, followed by a cooling tank and a drying tunnel before labelling.

Meat, poultry, cheese, seafood, bakery and ready-meal producers choose between these formats based on the product's shape, how the pack should look on the shelf, output and material cost. Robotic systems can load products into packs, or packed products into cases, automatically.
